Water Heater Tips
Signs Your Water Heater Needs Attention
Most water heaters don't fail overnight. They give off warning signs first. Knowing what to watch for can help you avoid cold showers, leaks, and water damage.
1. Inconsistent hot water or temperature swings
If your water goes from hot to lukewarm to cold during a single shower, sediment buildup or a failing thermostat may be to blame.
2. Strange noises from the tank
Popping, rumbling, or banging sounds often mean that mineral deposits have hardened on the bottom of the tank, forcing the burner or elements to work harder.
3. Visible leaks or rusty water
Any active leak at the base of the water heater or discolored, rusty water coming from hot taps should be checked immediately. These can be signs of internal tank corrosion.
4. Age of the system
Most traditional tank water heaters last 8–10 years when properly maintained. Tankless units can last longer, but still need regular flushing and service.
